As a Firefighter for over 24 years, I have seen too many homes with neglected Smoke detectors that malfunction or "false alarm" so much that people tend to ignore them. Another common situation we see is where the homeowner is unable do the "Ladder work " required to even access the ceiling. Worse yet I've even seen where the homeowners remove them completely to keep them from beeping randomly.
